Visit Jomfruland

All seasons are suitable for visiting Jomfruland, but the summer is most popular. If you want to stress down and take long strolls all by yourself, then the winter is the right time. The birdlife is at its most diverse during migration periods in spring and autumn, but you'll find something interesting in any season.

Transport
The ferry from Kragerø arrives two times a day at the quays of Aasvik brygge (the main quay) and Tårnbrygga (see map on the left side); in summer there are additional evening departures. Check the times here. There are also taxi boats available both in Kragerø and in Valle.

Accomodation

Staying at the bird observatory 
The bird observatory offers six beds, which must be booked in advance. Members of the local birding society (NOF-Telemark) have priority, but the station is open for all birders who are willing to participate in the daily routines. Experienced ringers are welcome for longer stays (generally more than one week). The station offers all facilities except shower, which is available nearby. At the station you stay along with other birders, and there are allways good opportunities for guiding on the local birding conditions! On Jomfruland, there are also a few other accomodation possibilities.

• Jomfruland camping - cabins, tents 
• Hasselgården - small farm offering three appartments for rent 
• Øitangen - public resort which can also be rented by privats 
• Hovedgården - larger farm which is for rent 
• Other private cottages for rent

Birding hotspots
When birding on Jomfruland, these places can be especially rewarding:

• Øitangen/Kråka - the north end 
• Saltstein - cliffs on the seaward side 
• The oak forest 
• The landward waters with islets 
• Tårnbrygga - the northern ferry quay, by the lighthouse 
• Kubukta - bay with coastal meadows close to the camping 
• Skadden - the south end

Note that Norwegian laws permit access to most types of non-cultivated land. Non-cultivated pastures can also be entered, as long as you close the gates! Avoid the private zones close to houses, farms and cottages, and do not cross fields or hay meadows. Be careful not to disturb breeding birds, especialle rare and uncommon species!

In summer, these facilities are available:

• Grocery and kiosk - Jomfruland landhandel, close to the camping and the southern ferry quay 
• The tavern "Haga Vertshus", by the Tårnbrygga (the northern ferry quay) 
• The old lighthouse
• Art exhibition at the lighthouse 
• Permanent exhibitions about Jomfruland, at the lighthouse and at Tårnbrygga 
• Agri shop at the farm Hasselgården - local, organically grown vegetables etc 

Activities and events
These events and activities during summer are recommendable:

• "Under the two towers" - Norwegian bands and artist performing in the lighthouse garden  
• The Jomfruland days - activities, refreshments, music and more at the school and village house  
• Horse riding, Gundersen farm (near the camping site and the groceries)
